Following the disappointment of Apple's Macintosh Classic, the company set about restoring user faith by releasing the Macintosh Classic II (aka Macintosh Performa 200), which provided a much needed speed boost.
History
The Mac Classic had not exactly been a brilliant success and many questioned Apple's motives for releasing a 1984 spec machine in 1990. Running its 68000 CPU at a paltry 8 MHz and lacking expansion of pretty much any kind, the Classic was anything but. The introduction of the Macintosh Classic II went some way to making up for the disappointment of the earlier machine.
Instead of the 68000 CPU, Apple opted for the 68030 used in the Mac SE/30 and made sure that they ramped it up to 16 MHz — just as in the earlier machine. Sadly, they didn't bring the 68882 floating point unit (FPU) across as well — although it does have a slot inside for one. On the positive side, the speed boost was a big plus for users. Elsewhere, very little had changed over the Mac Classic and while memory could be expanded up to 10 MiB — rather than the 4 MiB offered by the Classic — Apple had opted to reduce the number of RAM slots to two and limit them to 4 MiB each (the Classic II shipped with 2 MiB of RAM soldered directly onto the motherboard). The Classic II has a single PDS slot, although nothing aside from an FPU card was ever made for it.
Although released as the Classic II, the machine would later see life under its alternative name: the Macintosh Performa 200, released on September 14th 1992 and retired October 18th 1993 (compared to the Classic II's longer lifespan of October 21st 1991 to September 13th 1993). Aside from the name change, the two machines were identical.
