Half of the second wave of Duo machines, along with the Duo 270c, the Duo 250 may not have improved performance over the older Duo 230, but it did add a new screen and an improved battery to the Duo line.

Despite just over a year having passed since the release of the Duo 210 and Duo 230, coupled with impressive sales of the ultra-portable machine, Apple's follow-up didn't exactly set the world ablaze. Sharing exactly the same processor (the Motorola 68030), running at exactly the same speed (33 MHz) as the Duo 230, the 250 didn't actually perform any faster. It came with the same amount of memory, had the same memory ceiling, and still shared the limited connectivity and expansion as its two predecessors. So what did it add?

Performance-wise the Duo 250 might not have been anything new, but when it came to looks it was a whole new ball game. Both the 210 and the 230 had used the much maligned passive matrix display panels that were often subject to 'ghosting' and 'streaking'. Yes, they were kinder on battery life but they were hardly a joy to use. The alternative was to employ active matrix technology – but this ate power. The solution came in the Duo 250's improved Type II Nickel Hydride batteries. Not only did they provide power for longer, they also compensated for the added drain of an active matrix display.

Aside from the active matrix display and improved batteries, however, the 250 was nothing more than a re-badged 230 with a bigger hard drive – increased from 80 MiB to 200 MiB. Hardly a massive leap forward, given the 12 months of development that were put into the project.
